Andrology

Andrology is the medical and surgical discipline that deals with health issues relating to the male reproductive system, including erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems and infertility. It encompasses several branches of medicine, such as endocrinology, which is concerned with hormonal disorders, and urology, which focuses on conditions affecting the male reproductive organs and urinary tract.

Sexual dysfunction and problems with libido can affect anyone at any age. In such cases, patients should see an andrologist: a medical professional who specialises in conditions involving the male reproductive system and can provide effective care and the best treatment options.

The most common sexual problems are:

 Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, sometimes known as impotence, is the most common sexual problem in men. It may be caused by neurological, vascular, psychological or hormonal (late-onset hypogonadism) conditions, medications or unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as smoking, obesity or lack of exercise. Your andrologist will determine the cause of the problem and then provide the most appropriate treatment depending on your situation.

 Ejaculation problems

A consultation with an andrologist can determine whether premature or delayed ejaculation is primary or secondary, in other words, whether the problem has always been present since becoming sexually active, or whether it has developed after a period of normal sexual activity. The condition is often psychogenic and treatment usually involves a combination of psychotherapy and medication.

Infertility

A wide range of medical examinations and tests are carried out on both partners when a couple with fertility issues visits us for a consultation. A semen analysis, otherwise known as a sperm count, helps to identify, and then analyse, any abnormalities to ensure the most appropriate assisted reproductive technology procedure is used.

Personalised care

It is important to see a doctor as soon as you begin to experience sexual dysfunction, in order to avoid any medical or psychosexual effects in later life.

We carry out a full sexual health assessment to identify the causes and tailor treatment accordingly. We may suggest a medical approach, such as low-intensity shock wave treatment, platelet-rich plasma injections or conventional medical treatment options, or a surgical solution, such as an artificial penile implant.

An andrology specialist, sometimes working together with a sexologist, delivers comprehensive care and patients receive personalised follow-up throughout their treatment.
