Medical oncology comprises chemotherapy, hormone therapy and other active medical treatments to control cancer.

Clinique de Genolier has facilities which provide out-patient care for people who require chemotherapy. This unit prepares cytostatic drugs under negative pressure isolation. It comprises consultation rooms and treatment rooms which allow our clients to receive out-patient treatment in comfort.

Chemotherapy involves administering drugs which act on the cancerous cells, either destroying them or preventing them from multiplying. The term chemotherapy refers to a number of different groups of drugs:

  • cytostatic agents
  • hormones
  • immunotherapies
  • monoclonal antibodies and targeted treatments.

The dosage, administration schedule and the way the drugs are combined are all tailored to the individual patient’s state of health and medical condition. Medication to treat tumours may be administered by mouth, but it is more commonly given by injection or intravenous infusion. This requires the patient to be treated on an out-patient basis (for a few hours) or an in-patient basis (between 2 and several days). Chemotherapy is sometimes accompanied by unpleasant side effects. Research and medical care have focused on reducing these side effects as far as possible.

The cancer specialists at Clinique de Genolier can assess each patient’s risk situation and incorporate this information when the treatment is being planned. A discussion with the doctor provides an opportunity to consider the degree of inconvenience that the patient is willing or able to accept in view of the potential benefit of the treatment.
